GlamourGals and Public Policy

Sofie G., President of the Henderson High School GG chapter, reflects on how leading a GlamourGals chapter has impacted her community and her life as she prepares for college.

There is no other group, like GG, at my school or in my community! We are truly unique to West Chester, Pennsylvania. In my time in GlamourGals, I have learned so much from the seniors in my community. I find myself learning so much from them – information I can’t necessarily learn from my peers at school. Discovering this last year has truly made me go above and beyond in my efforts to help the seniors, so I can continue to create everlasting bonds with them. This year, as President of my chapter, I planned a card writing event that my entire school took part in to support the seniors at a local retirement center. During our Homecoming Carnival, over 100 students wrote kindness cards that were given to the seniors. I was told by so many that it truly made their day and that the cards had such a big impact on them. Now, before every visit, my chapter holds meetings to write kindness cards and create little gifts on occasion to give to the seniors to continue this tradition.

I love being able to help the seniors, but, more importantly, I love to see the impact it has on the community as a whole. So many students at my school have become active in GlamourGals through the promotion of our group by the Leadership Board. GG not only affects me, but impacts seniors, teachers, parents, and students at Henderson High School.

Next year, I am attending the University of Pittsburgh to study Political Science. I originally became so interested in Political Science because of my willingness and love for helping others. It all sparked when I started a GG chapter. Starting a chapter of GlamourGals and serving as President for 2 years has given me a leadership opportunity, like no other, putting me in situations where I had to make decisions for over 60 members of my club. Being a leader, I inspire other students to make the seniors happy with our visits, and it has been the best experience of my life. I now have the biggest passion for service and supporting others in any way. I thank GlamourGals for not only showing me how to be an amazing leader but for showing me how to apply it to my future career. When I am helping others through public policy one day, I will remember all of the leadership skills I learned in high school through GG and will be thankful for the experience.
