Finding Your Confidence Through Growth

Jin Y., Benjamin N. Cardozo Chapter Treasurer, shares how GlamourGals has allowed her to find her confidence and grow as an individual.

Throughout my time at GlamourGals, I went above and beyond serving the seniors in my community by hearing their experiences and catering whatever moments I had with them – to them. I feel like in this day and age, everyone is on social media and not present in the moment. GlamourGals allowed me to have a nice one-on-one conversation with a senior, where she shared her feelings and thoughts of discomfort in her current situation at the care center. I also shared some of my own discomforts and challenging aspects of my life at that time. The outcome of this encounter was life changing for me and for her; we learned something about each other and helped each other flourish in our own lives. Despite the generational gap difference, I was glad that I was there for her, and I’m grateful that she was there for me, too.

My GG experience has influenced me as an individual and a leader by showing me that I can handle and test my limits when hard things come my way. It has encouraged me to take on challenges in a more positive way and to be more experimental with myself in terms of networking with other people. Growing up as a reserved kid, I didn’t come across many opportunities to grow socially until I joined GlamourGals during my freshman year of high school. Before I knew it, I was socializing more and having fun building a community, making connections with people, and making friends. As a leader, I’m able to manage and handle the socializing aspect so much more easily and know that I can test myself to go beyond by doing more outreach, asking for help from my fellow leaders, and having more of a positive impact on my fellow schoolmates. I help the younger volunteers to thrive in the organization by using my resources, tools, and expertise. That’s the most rewarding part of leadership for me.
