How it all began
Rachel Doyle founded GlamourGals in 2000 as a junior in high school in memory of her grandmother, who had recently passed away. The first GlamourGals makeover took place in Commack, New York with only three volunteers.
While in high school, Rachel operated GlamourGals as a local community service project. After receiving national press attention from the New York Times, the Oprah Winfrey Show, and the CBS Early Show, hundreds of people reached out to Rachel through her newly created website, GlamourGals.org. In response to this overwhelming interest, Rachel began helping other students create GlamourGals chapters in their own communities.
GlamourGals was officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2002 to create the structure needed for its continued growth. That same year, the annual GlamourGals Leadership Training Institute and the Glammy Awards were created to bring together the diverse and growing base of GlamourGals volunteers.
In 2005, GlamourGals created the first version of GGchapters.org, an interactive volunteer website used to manage chapters around the country. Today, GGchapters.org is an essential tool GlamourGals volunteers use to post events, track their hours, journal about their experiences, and chart their impact.
The first college chapter was established in 2008 at Vanderbilt University, in response to the demand of GlamourGals volunteers graduating high school who wanted to continue volunteering. GlamourGals continued to expand nationally as more and more people found out about its mission through speaking engagements, press, word of mouth, and partnerships with other service organizations. By 2009, GlamourGals had grown to 46 chapters in 16 states.
In 2015, the Women Helping Others Foundation awarded GlamourGals a transformational grant that allowed the creation of 30 additional chapters and secured the resources GlamourGals needs for a more sustainable future.
Today, there are almost 100 volunteer chapters in high schools and colleges across the country. We hope you will get involved with GlamourGals and help us continue to grow.
