When my friend first asked me to join the club, I wasn't really sure if I wanted to. I am not the best at starting or holding a conversation and I didn't think spending a day with the elderly seemed very enjoyable. But I decided to join anyway. At the time I did not know that joining GlamourGals would be one of the best decisions I had made.
Joining this club actually helped me with my communication skills and really helped me to realize that these ladies (and even a few men) need someone to talk to and listen to them. GlamourGals is the perfect way for a community to come together and really make a difference. To have the opportunity to sit down for a couple of hours and exchange stories, laughter, and ideas with people who have so much experience is seen as a privilege to me. On multiple occasions these ladies have made me tear up because of how thankful they are for our presence. There are no words to explain the feelings of not only the seniors, but the volunteers when we visit. GlamourGals is truly an amazing experience of which I am grateful to be a part.
Each GlamourGal event was a special experience but one event that is most memorable to me was an event that took place around December break. For this event, I wanted to give the ladies a holiday gift to show our appreciation for allowing us to be there with them. We had purchased ornaments and wrote on one side “Happy Holidays” and on the other side “From: Your GlamourGals” on every one of them. Seeing the smiles on these ladies was priceless and unforgettable. Being able to make these women happy is what makes this club extremely special. We hugged and they had thanked us for their gifts and for our company. This club has taught me that everyone needs someone to talk to, to listen to, to laugh with, and even share silence with because no matter where you are or who you are, being alone in this world is not a life at all.
Since a young age, I always knew that I wanted to help people and GlamourGals has given me a taste of what I would like my future to hold in the medical field. Although I did not help these ladies with their health, I did help them by taking time out of my day to lend an ear. Going to the events and creating bonds with these ladies is something I hope to achieve with my patients. Being a member and one of the leaders of the club, I had to take initiative of some situations. When the other girls had trouble communicating with the ladies, I had tried my best to help. [GlamourGals] has given me an outline of the type of leader and communicator I would like to be in the near future.
