2018 Glammy Finalist Blog Series: Jessica Lum, President

Today, our Glammy Finalist Blog Series will feature Jessica Lum, president of the Townsend Harris Chapter. She will be sharing with us her love of helping others, and how GlamourGals has provided her the opportunity to really make a difference. She also talks about how her experience as a GlamourGals volunteer has motivated her to pursue a career in cosmetic dermatology.

Why is GlamourGals important to you and your community?

The elderly population is, unfortunately, a commonly forgotten group of people. Many who live in senior homes tend to feel forgotten and disconnected from their communities. They have been deprived of that reassuring human touch and communication which I believe is crucial to one’s well being. GlamourGals is important to me and my community because I’ve always loved helping others. Becoming a member of the Townsend Harris Chapter gave me that opportunity. I get to make a change by providing the senior citizens I visit with companionship that can make a world of a difference. I can immediately feel that difference whenever our chapter walks into their room. I see their eyes light up, and their smiles beam from their faces because we are here to spend the evening with them. The work we do lets them know that they are most certainly not forgotten in our community. In fact, they are a very important part of it.

I have received so much wisdom and advice from the conversations I have had with these ladies while painting their nails. It truly is a blessing to have their stories and knowledge passed down to another generation.

How have your experiences as a GlamourGals volunteer shaped your aspirations and future career goals?

Growing up, I have always felt passionate about helping others, and becoming part of GlamourGals has grounded that in me even more. Something that I’ve learned through being a volunteer is that I love making people feel confident and beautiful. At some makeovers, ladies tell me they haven’t had their nails done in years, and that having them done makes them feel very special. Some have even told me that they get compliments on their nails throughout the week. As a result, more ladies would show up at the next makeover to get their nails painted too.

It really is amazing what a coat of nail polish can do to boost a person’s confidence. I am a strong believer in the way that your outward appearance can shape the way you feel on the inside. That is one of the main reasons why I want to continue making others feel as beautiful on the inside as they do on the outside. In order to do this, I hope to pursue cosmetic dermatology because it combines many of my passions into one career.

Self-care is something very important that I think many of us neglect in our everyday lives. Feeling secure in the way you look can be a really motivating and reassuring factor when it comes to self-confidence. Going to makeovers allows me to help others and give these ladies self-confidence. I will always carry with me everything that I have gained from being a GlamourGal through the paths that I will take in my future.
