Every other Sunday I look forward to going to Andrus on Hudson to give makeovers and to do nails for the women who live there. A lot of times when I walk in the lobby with the rest of the volunteers, at least one person asks me, whether it be the receptionist at the front desk who we have never seen before or a resident or someone that is visiting their friend/family member, "Oh, are you the GlamourGals?!". And then people who are visiting a friend/family say how they have heard about us and how they appreciate it. Last time we went to Aundrus, one woman was leaving from a visit and she stopped us and said, "Are you the girls who come to do makeovers?" and when we answered she just gave us such a big smile and enthusiastically said "That's SO cool! Keep doing what you are doing, it's awesome!" I was honestly surprised that someone who had only heard about GG appreciated what we were doing for ladies (and some men, too) at Aundrus. By just being companions to a few residents, we are inspiring so many more people.Once when I went to sign in at the front desk, there was a new receptionist who was working the morning shift and she said to me, "Everyone has been talking about you, they are look forward to having their makeovers." Once again it made me realized that just a little more than one hour twice a week makes so many enjoyable memories for ourselves and the for women who we spend it with. That same morning when I was signing in, I heard someone that works at Aundrus call out to the receptionist asking what other activities were planned for the residents that day. The receptionist called back that only the GlamourGals were scheduled for the morning activities. I was so proud of our chapter and all the volunteers that came at that moment because we made the difference of giving the ladies a fun and upbeat way to spend their time between breakfast and lunch instead of just hanging around with nothing to do.
During our last makeover, which was Valentines Day themed, we were assigned to go to a level that we had never been to before. I was even a bit nervous going up the elevator because I was so used to meeting up with the amazing group of women who live on the fourth floor. They are so funny, entertaining and interesting to talk to. They are always so appreciative of us for coming, and I don't think they realize how much fun we have, too! When we got to the fifth floor, it was hard to talk to the big group of men and women who were scattered around in their wheelchairs across the room. Many of them did not want to talk or get their nails done. It was hard to open and find good conversation topics. Luckily, I pulled out my violin and played music for the residents. I think they liked it, so I am happy that they enjoyed themselves. Even though us teenagers really have fun bonding with the ladies at Aundrus through the makeovers, not everyone can find that enjoyable. And in the end, even if we go out of our comfort zone, we were able to please so many people, and that's what counts :)
This journal has been pretty scattered with gg memories but I haven't journaled in a while and these are some memories I have of recent makeovers! The picture that is attached is of Lori, me and Murielle, who has been one our most loyal GG attendees at Aundrus on Hudson. She comes to almost every makeover and I absolutely love spending time with her. We always have great conversations and the stories that she shares with me inspire me so much <3
