"Volunteering changes the way I look at life" Yvette

"When she walked into the room her eyes were sorrowful and bland. I grabbed her a chair and we started talking about her adventurous life that had been stopped when she was put into this elderly home. Phyllis told me about her family, friends, and the places she had been, all the dancing she had done and the people she had met. I got to know this wonderful women and I could already tell her spirit was being lifted. At that moment I felt an energy I never felt before. I could not put it into words... I knew I had touched someone's soul as they touched mine."

"It started out like any other Sunday..." Sherouk

"What really amazed me about [her] was that she was so at peace with everything. She would tell me a sad story, like that her son never comes to visit and then she just laughs and asks me when I'll come and visit again. Some of the things she said almost made me cry, especially when she emphasized how lonely she is. Then I would try to change the subject and ask her about what she likes to do and we'd have a conversation about that. Mae made me feel so good about myself even though I had a rough morning."

"When it comes down to it, we're just like [the elderly]. I try to make my chapter understand that fact. Sometimes we're scared of other people because we think they are different. We're all the same though, been through the same thing in different ways. When my chapter understood that, they were no longer afraid."
