On Saturday, May 21, Micayla Gammon was awarded the prestigious $1,000 Chapter PR Officer Glammy Scholarship Award at the 12th annual Glammy Scholarship Awards in New York, NY. Micayla is from Powell, Ohio and was flown to New York City to accept this award by sponsor Beauticontrol.
Micayla joined her GG chapter at Olentangy Liberty High School in 2014 as a volunteer, and then became a PR officer. In this role, she has gone above and beyond to spread the word about her chapter through morning announcements, ads in their school newspaper and parent newsletter, and setting up a booth during lunches. There were over 130 people at their first interest meeting of the year!
For Micyala, these accomplishments are secondary to the connections she and her fellow volunteers have made with the seniors they visit. As she commented in her acceptance speech, "The elderly are such special people who deserve the utmost respect and dignity. There is so much that young people like myself can learn from them, and if anyone knows how to handle life or offer the best advice it is them."
Micayla will begin working towards her nursing degree at the University of Indianapolis this fall. This decision was inspired by her experience as a GlamourGals volunteer: “Every week, I looked forward to GlamourGals because it was a time where I could give back to my community, and bond with elderly residents by not only giving them makeovers, but by doing puzzles with them, talking, and laughing. Manicures and makeovers really are just half the story."
